What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai, also known as “Thai Boxing,” is a traditional martial art and combat sport from Thailand is over 3,000 years old and is an integral part of Thai cultural heritage and national identity. It is often referred to as the “Art of Nine Limbs” because it uses eight points of contact—fists, elbows, knees, and shins—as opposed to other combat sports that primarily rely on two (fists) or four (fists and feet), with the most important “limb” being your “head” or rather using your mind.
Muay Thai has its origins on ancient battlefields. It evolved as a practical combat skill for Thai warriors, developed for close-quarters combat when soldiers lost their weapons in battle. The martial art uses the body’s eight contact points—fists, elbows, knees, and shins—as weapons, making it effective for self-defense and military purposes.
Thai soldiers were trained in Muay Boran, the precursor to modern Muay Thai. Muay Boran is more of a combat-oriented form, while Muay Thai is the sport that developed from it. Soldiers needed a way to defend themselves effectively if they were disarmed, and Muay Boran was that solution, using the body as a powerful weapon.
